Gia Kearns would rather fight with boys than kiss them. That is, until Arik, a leather clad hottie in the Boston Athenaeum, suddenly disappears. While examining the book of world libraries he abandoned, Gia unwittingly speaks the key that sucks her and her friends into a photograph and transports them into a Paris library, where Arik and his Sentinels—magical knights charged with protecting humans from the creatures traveling across the gateway books—rescue them from a demonic hound.

Jumping into some of the world's most beautiful libraries would be a dream come true for Gia, if she weren’t busy resisting her heart or dodging an exiled wizard seeking revenge on both the Mystik and human worlds. Add a French flirt obsessed with Arik and a fling with a young wizard, and Gia must choose between her heart and her head, between Arik's world and her own, before both are destroyed.

Have you ever imagined yourself visiting all the wonderful libraries all over the world and browsing all the amazing books in each of those libraries? I certainly have, especially since there aren't really any public libraries here in the Philippines, which is really just sad. Anyway, if you have imagined that yourself, then this book is absolutely for you because the main character can jump from one library to another in any part of the world using a key and a book! Isn't that just amazing? But here's a catch, there are also monsters in this book, and she is part of the species tasked to protect humans from such monsters.

This book helped me realized that urban fantasy is what I prefer to high fantasy books because I find them just so much easier to get into. Brenda Drake created a stunning and vivid world in Thief of Lies, which I absolutely adored. The story and characters were very interesting, the plot was intricately woven, and it's clear that everything was well thought of. The pacing was just right, at the same time it kept me on the edge of my seat, not being able to wait to find out more. This is the first book in a long time that I read continuously for hours and it's practically read in one sitting because I only read 10 pages in the first, and then the rest in the second.

I absolutely loved that there is magic in this book, because I've been missing reading about magic. I really enjoyed the story and the different types of characters in the book. Although there were a lot of things to remember, it didn't really confuse me as much as I thought it would. Gosh, I need more books like these to totally convert me to read more fantasy books!

Even as the book ended, I can tell that there are still so many things to uncover about this world and the characters within it, without feeling like this first book gave inadequate information. I absolutely loved this book and I couldn't wait to read the next one! Ugh, just when would that be published? I need that book!

4.5 so-jealous-of-the-main-character stars.
